My son still has to take the test for Chapter 12, but I can put the book on the shelf by Friday. After using Jacobs 'Elementary Algebra', we had to adjust to the depth in this book. It's definitely challenging. However, I think it is well-written and is a good book to follow the Jacobs book. I wish I had had more time to work through some of the problems myself.

I also wish I had had the teacher manual to help plan assignments since some of the problems were obviously intended to be 'challenge' problems. I have gone through the first half of this book with three of my children and think it is an excellent math book.

I had every intention of working through the second half by myself, but there are so many other demands on the life of a busy mom and so many other books to read. Hopefully, I will pick it up now and then but best to wrap it up here. I would have given this book 5 stars, but I am no math expert and didn't finish. I do recommend it though for home school families learning high school math at home, especially if one of the parents likes math and is willing to learn as well.High points: good review problems before the start of each set of exercises and great step-by-step, real life problems.

The Home Study Companion: Algebra 2 / Trig lessons distributed on an 8GB reusable flash drive are based on Paul A. Foersters Algebra and Trigonometry: Functions and Applications. This textbook is available as part of Prentice Halls Classics series, or in older editions through various used book sources.

Textbook

The text is a true classic!Paul A. Foerster has taught mathematics at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas since 1961. In that same year he received his teaching certificate from Texas A&M University. Degree in Chemical Engineering and M.A. Degree in Mathematics are from the University of Texas. Among many honors, he was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching in 1983.

He brings to his teaching and textbook writing the insights from his engineering background. Paul Foerster is a name synonymous with math. He has not only taught math, he has a degree in chemical engineering and a Masters in mathematics along with the honor of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching. He has written the successful Algebra 2 and Trigonometry course that is to be used following Harold Jacobs Elementary Algebra and Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding. Paul Foerster has also written his own Algebra 1, which is the same great quality as his other math courses. Pair a well-loved high school math series (Foersters) with video instruction and you have a winning combination.

Math Without Borders Home Study Companions provide an element of confidence; the conviction that a challenging high school math course is completely manageable. You have a teacher in your corner.

One who calmly and clarifyingly teaches math. Packaged on practical thumb drives, the videos (mp4 format compatible with both Macs & PCs) provide electronic whiteboard presentations to accompany the textbook lessons plus worked solutions to selected assigned problems.I remember hearing of math courses authored by Paul Foerster in the early 2000s. Considered an excellent choice for college prep math, they were nevertheless not readily available.

And, you were on your own with them. Many of us need good support material to bolster homeschoolers confidence and there just wasnt much available. Sometimes, it was even hard to get an answer key.

David Chandler and Math Without Borders changes all that. These excellent courses (plus geometry from another author) provide a quality, college-prep, high school scope and sequence and they are do-able in a homeschool setting even if mom is a mathophobe. The videos are a substitution for class attendance. The idea is to read the days lesson, then watch the video. Use half of the lesson problems as a daily assignment; using the remainder if additional practice is needed. The Math Without Borders videos include explanatory videos plus worked problem solutions for either select problems or the even problems.

These solutions can be used to get over a roadblock. Many of the thumb drives include a Resources File which provides spreadsheets and material referred to in the lessons. The videos (i.e. Content of thumb drives) should be saved onto your computer as soon as possible; do not continue to use them from the thumb drive for the duration of the course. They are nontransferable (i.e.

May not be transferred or assigned) and can only be used on one computer although you can make a single copy as a back-up. Video lessons were filmed 2007-2008 (Geometry 2014; Algebra 2 with Trig updated this year - 2017) with problem solutions added circa 2015. Each drive includes material on how to set up the course, what texts to use and how to use them, as well as links for obtaining suggested free software downloads. Some courses include printable pdf material. The drive material lists several software items freely available on the internet that are used in some optional (but useful) lessons.Although a mentoring approach to assessment is encouraged, the Mr. Chandler does provide suggestions for material that can be used as self-tests or assessments. Chandler notes that trigonometry is rarely taught as a separate course anymore but rather paired with either Algebra 2 or Precalculus. Paul Foerster includes it in both courses. Math Without Borders strongly suggests that taking both courses (dont skip the Precalculus course) is recommended because work leading up to calculus is foundational for later math courses and mathematically based professions. The evens are solved in the videos with explanations (they are separate from the instructional videos). As the teacher in the video states on his site, 'Solution manuals are available.

But you will probably not need the solution manual for this course because each lesson has a second video that demonstrates the solutions of a significant number of problems, enough to be the entire assignment.' I think the video works the even problems. The book does have tests in it. I don't think the videos have test answers-the teacher in the video has a philosophy of testing and grading that he explains on his website. on Aug 6, 2019.
